A glycosylated hemoglobin test is used to measure the amount of blood sugar (glucose) around hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a component of the blood’s red cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
The importance of a glycosylated hemoglobin test is that it shows the amount of glucose around hemoglobin from the past three months, meaning the entire life of a red blood cell.

Glycosylated Haemoglobin (HBA1C) is a form of hemoglobin that is linked to sugar. Your body cannot deal with the larger quantity of sugar and the remains stick to blood cells and build up in your blood. What do the glycosylated hemoglobin test results mean?
Glycosylated hemoglobin test results are given in percentages.
There are three typical results:
- Normal: glycosylated hemoglobin test results below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: glycosylated hemoglobin blood test results between 5.7% and 6.4%
- Diabetes: glycosylated hemoglobin test results higher than 6.5%
Special instructions?
If you have anemia or any blood disorder, the glycosylated hemoglobin test results might be less accurate in diagnosing diabetes.
Also, the glycosylated hemoglobin test is not used for gestational diabetes, the one that only affects pregnant women, or to diagnose diabetes in children.
