An Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise the abdominal aorta, the main blood vessel supplying blood from the heart to the lower body. It does not use radiation and is considered very safe.
The scan measures the diameter of the abdominal aorta, allowing clinicians to identify whether an aneurysm (abnormal widening of the artery) is present. An aneurysm may enlarge slowly over time and often causes no symptoms, making screening particularly important.
AAA ultrasound is the gold-standard screening test for abdominal aortic aneurysms and is widely used in preventative cardiovascular care.
An AAA ultrasound scan is recommended for individuals at increased risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm or when an aneurysm is suspected. Early detection is crucial, as aneurysms can rupture if left untreated.
You may need an AAA ultrasound scan if you:
Screening allows aneurysms to be detected early, monitored safely and treated before complications occur.
Home-Based AAA Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
AAA ultrasound scans are offered exclusively as home-visit services. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to be screened without attending a clinic.
AAA results are interpreted based on aortic diameter measurements, using UK clinical thresholds.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
