Details about Antithyroglobulin Antibodies
The Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies (Anti-TG) Blood Test detects antibodies directed against thyroglobulin, a key thyroid protein. It is used to assess autoimmune thyroid disease, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, and to support thyroid health evaluation. Testing is performed in a UKAS-accredited laboratory, with an optional GP consultation.
What is the Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies Test?
Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by the thyroid gland and is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). In autoimmune thyroid conditions, the immune system may mistakenly produce antibodies against thyroglobulin, leading to inflammation and impaired thyroid function.
The Anti-TG test helps identify immune-mediated damage to the thyroid and is often used alongside:
-
Thyroid function tests (TSH, Free T4, Free T3)
-
Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (Anti-TPO)
Anti-TG antibodies may be present even before thyroid hormone levels become abnormal, making the test valuable for early detection.
At London Blood Tests, Anti-TG antibodies are measured using validated immunoassay techniques aligned with UK endocrinology standards.
Benefits of the Anti-TG Antibodies Test
-
Detects Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
Identifies immune-related thyroid dysfunction. -
Supports Diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
Commonly elevated in autoimmune hypothyroidism. -
Useful in Graves’ Disease Assessment
Helps assess autoimmune activity affecting the thyroid. -
Assists Early Thyroid Dysfunction Detection
Antibodies may appear before hormone changes. -
Complements Other Thyroid Tests
Enhances interpretation of TSH, T3, and T4 results. -
Non-Invasive & Simple Blood Test
Requires only a standard blood sample. -
Optional GP Consultation for Interpretation
Results reviewed with a GP for clinical guidance.
Why Do I Need an Anti-TG Antibodies Test?
You may benefit from this test if you:
-
Have symptoms of thyroid dysfunction
-
Have abnormal thyroid hormone levels
-
Have a family history of thyroid disease
-
Have other autoimmune conditions
-
Are monitoring known autoimmune thyroid disease
Common symptoms associated with autoimmune thyroid disease include:
-
Fatigue
-
Weight changes
-
Cold or heat intolerance
-
Hair thinning
-
Mood changes
-
Neck discomfort or swelling
Because autoimmune thyroid disease can progress gradually, antibody testing helps clarify the underlying cause.

Your Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies Results – Explained
Results are reported in IU/mL.
Typical UK reference guidance:
-
Negative / Normal: < 115 IU/mL (ranges may vary by lab)
Interpretation:
-
Positive / Elevated Anti-TG: suggests autoimmune thyroid disease
-
Normal Anti-TG: autoimmune thyroid disease less likely
Important notes:
-
Anti-TG antibodies can be present even with normal thyroid function
-
Results should be interpreted alongside TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and Anti-TPO antibodies

WhatsApp UsHow to Prepare for Your Test
Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
