1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol)
This test measures 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the biologically active form of vitamin D. It is used to investigate calcium imbalance, kidney disease and...

The Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) Blood Test measures ApoB, the main protein found on atherogenic (“bad”) cholesterol particles such as LDL and VLDL. It is a powerful marker for cardiovascular risk, often more predictive than LDL cholesterol alone. Testing is performed in a UKAS-accredited laboratory, with an optional GP consultation.
What is an Apolipoprotein B Blood Test?
Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is present on every atherogenic lipoprotein particle, including LDL, VLDL, IDL, and lipoprotein(a). Because each particle contains one ApoB molecule, ApoB directly reflects the number of cholesterol particles capable of causing plaque buildup in arteries.
Traditional LDL cholesterol measures the amount of cholesterol, not the number of particles. In many people—especially those with insulin resistance, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome—LDL cholesterol can appear normal while ApoB is elevated, masking true cardiovascular risk.
The ApoB test is widely used in advanced lipid profiling and is recommended by many international cardiovascular guidelines.
Benefits of the Apolipoprotein B Test
Why Do I Need an Apolipoprotein B Test?
You may benefit from an ApoB test if you:
ApoB testing is especially useful if:
Because heart disease often develops silently, ApoB testing enables earlier and more precise prevention.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
