The Arsenic (Urine) Test is a toxicology analysis designed to identify and quantify arsenic levels in the urine, offering a reliable indication of recent exposure to this toxic element. Arsenic is a naturally occurring metal found in soil, groundwater, and certain foods (especially rice, seafood, and shellfish). It’s also used industrially in pesticides, wood preservatives, and metal processing.
High or prolonged exposure to arsenic can damage the liver, kidneys, nervous system, and skin, and is associated with increased long-term risks of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Urine testing is the most accurate method for assessing arsenic exposure because the element is primarily eliminated through urine within a few days of contact.
At London Blood Tests, your sample is analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), one of the most precise laboratory techniques for trace metal detection. Results reflect exposure over the past 24–72 hours and can help differentiate between organic (less harmful) and inorganic (toxic) forms of arsenic.
Arsenic exposure can occur through contaminated water, air, food, or occupational contact. Because symptoms are often non-specific and develop slowly, testing is the only reliable way to confirm exposure levels.
You may need this test if you:
Testing helps differentiate between acute exposure (recent high dose) and chronic exposure (low-level accumulation over time). The test is also recommended after known chemical spills or environmental incidents.
Urine arsenic levels are measured in micrograms per litre (µg/L) or micrograms per gram of creatinine (µg/g creatinine) to account for urine concentration.
Typical UK reference ranges:
If creatinine-corrected results are used (common in 24-hour collections):
Interpretation notes:
Results are analysed under UKAS-accredited ISO 15189 standards, ensuring clinical accuracy.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
