An Arterial – Carotid Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive vascular scan that uses high-frequency sound waves and Doppler technology to visualise the carotid arteries in the neck and measure blood flow. It does not use ionising radiation and is considered very safe.
The scan evaluates arterial wall structure, plaque presence, and flow velocity, helping detect narrowing (stenosis) that can increase the risk of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or stroke. Doppler analysis shows how well blood is flowing to the brain in real time.
When performed at home with portable medical-grade equipment, it offers the same diagnostic value as clinic-based scanning, with added comfort and convenience.
A carotid Doppler ultrasound is recommended for people with cardiovascular risk factors, neurological symptoms, or as part of preventative vascular screening. It helps identify silent arterial disease before serious events occur.
You may need a carotid Doppler ultrasound if you:
Early detection allows timely risk reduction and treatment planning.
Home-Based Arterial – Carotid Doppler Ultrasound (UK-wide)
Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided exclusively as home-visit services. This service is available UK-wide, allowing access to vascular imaging without attending a clinic.
Results are interpreted using blood flow velocities and degree of narrowing, in line with UK clinical standards.
Normal Findings
What this means:
What it suggests:
Low risk of carotid-related stroke at the time of scanning.
Mild to Moderate Stenosis
What this may show:
What it suggests:
Often managed with lifestyle changes and medication (e.g. cholesterol and blood pressure control).
Significant or Severe Stenosis
What this may show:
What it suggests:
May require urgent referral to a vascular specialist for further assessment and management.

WhatsApp UsFollow these guidelines for accurate results
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
