Details about Arterial Doppler Bilateral

What is an Arterial – Carotid Doppler Ultrasound?

An Arterial – Carotid Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive vascular scan that examines the carotid arteries located on either side of the neck, which supply blood to the brain. Using sound waves, the scan measures blood flow velocity, direction, and arterial wall structure.

The test can detect atherosclerotic plaque, arterial narrowing (stenosis), reduced circulation, or abnormal flow patterns, all of which are important markers for stroke and cardiovascular risk. It does not use radiation and is completely painless.

This scan is widely used in preventive cardiovascular screening, stroke risk assessment, and follow-up of known arterial disease.

When an Arterial – Carotid Doppler is recommended

A carotid Doppler scan is recommended when there is concern about blood supply to the brain or underlying vascular disease.

You may be advised to have this scan if you:

  • Have had a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
  • Experience dizziness, fainting, or visual disturbances
  • Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Have diabetes or a history of smoking
  • Have a carotid bruit detected on examination
  • Have known cardiovascular disease
  • Need monitoring of carotid artery narrowing
  • Want proactive cardiovascular and stroke risk assessment

Benefits of an Arterial – Carotid Doppler Ultrasound

  • Assesses blood flow to the brain
Evaluates circulation through the carotid arteries.
  • Detects plaque and arterial narrowing
    Identifies early or advanced atherosclerosis.
  • Supports stroke risk assessment
Helps guide prevention and treatment decisions.
  • Non-invasive and painless
    No needles or radiation exposure.
  • Provides real-time vascular information
Measures flow velocity and direction instantly.
  • Safe and repeatable
    Suitable for ongoing monitoring.
  • Supports cardiovascular health planning
Useful in risk stratification and follow-up.
  • Widely used in preventive medicine
A key investigation in vascular assessment.

How the Arterial – Carotid Doppler Ultrasound is performed

Home-Based Ultrasound Scans (UK-wide)

  • Book your ultrasound appointment online or by phone
  • A qualified clinician travels to your home or chosen location
  • The scan is performed in the comfort and privacy of your home
  • Scan duration varies by examination type (typically 10–30 minutes)
  • Findings are explained during or shortly after the scan

Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided as home-visit services only. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to access diagnostic imaging without attending a clinic.

Understanding your Arterial – Carotid Doppler results

Normal findings

Blood flows smoothly with no significant narrowing or plaque.

Typical report:

  • Normal carotid arterial flow

Mild to moderate stenosis

Plaque is present, causing partial narrowing of the artery.

Typical report:

  • Mild / moderate carotid artery stenosis

This may require monitoring and cardiovascular risk management.

Significant stenosis

Marked narrowing may significantly affect blood flow.

Typical report:

  • Significant carotid artery stenosis detected

Further specialist assessment may be advised.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
