A Breast Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of breast tissue. It does not use ionising radiation and is considered very safe.
A bilateral breast ultrasound examines both breasts in the same appointment, allowing direct comparison of breast tissue on each side. This is particularly useful when symptoms are present in both breasts, changes are unclear, or a comprehensive assessment is required.
The scan evaluates breast tissue, ducts and surrounding structures to identify cysts, solid masses, inflammation, fluid collections or other abnormalities.
A bilateral breast ultrasound scan is recommended when symptoms, concerns or findings affect both breasts, or when a full assessment is required for reassurance. It helps determine whether changes are benign, symmetrical or require further investigation.
You may need a bilateral breast ultrasound scan if you notice:
Scanning both breasts improves diagnostic accuracy and confidence.
Clinic-Based Bilateral Breast Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
Breast ultrasound scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available. Services are available across the UK.
Breast ultrasound results are interpreted based on tissue structure, symmetry and appearance, rather than numerical values.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
