A Breast Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of breast tissue. It does not use radiation and is considered very safe.
A unilateral breast ultrasound focuses on one breast only, making it ideal when symptoms or findings are localised to a single side. The scan assesses breast tissue, ducts and surrounding structures to identify cysts, solid masses, inflammation or fluid collections.
Breast ultrasound is commonly used as a first-line investigation, particularly in younger patients or alongside mammography for targeted assessment.
A unilateral breast ultrasound scan is recommended when symptoms, physical findings or clinical concerns affect one breast. It helps determine the nature of changes and whether further tests are required.
You may need a breast ultrasound scan if you notice:
Early assessment helps provide reassurance and guides appropriate next steps.
Clinic-Based Breast Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
Breast ultrasound scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available. Services are available across the UK.
Breast ultrasound results are interpreted based on tissue appearance and structure, not numerical values.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
