1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol)
This test measures 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the biologically active form of vitamin D. It is used to investigate calcium imbalance, kidney disease and...
This test detects antibodies against Brucella bacteria in the blood. It helps diagnose brucellosis, a systemic bacterial infection transmitted from animals to humans.

Brucella serology is a blood test used to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Brucella bacteria. Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or consumption of unpasteurised dairy products.
The test identifies evidence of current or past exposure by measuring specific antibodies. Because Brucella infections can be chronic and difficult to detect by culture alone, serology plays a key role in diagnosis.
This test is commonly used when symptoms are persistent, non-specific, or when there is a relevant exposure history.
You may need this test if you have symptoms suggestive of brucellosis and a history of potential exposure to livestock or unpasteurised animal products. Brucellosis can cause prolonged illness if untreated and may affect multiple organs.
Early detection allows prompt antibiotic treatment, reducing the risk of chronic infection or complications such as joint, liver or nervous system involvement.
Symptoms and scenarios where testing is recommended:
· Supports diagnosis of brucellosis
Identifies immune response to Brucella infection.
· Useful when cultures are negative or unavailable
Helps detect infection that may be missed by other methods.
· Assists early treatment decisions
Enables timely antibiotic therapy.
· Reduces risk of chronic complications
Early diagnosis helps prevent long-term disease.
· Suitable for occupational exposure assessment
Valuable for at-risk professions.
· Non-invasive diagnostic tool
Requires only a blood sample.
· Supports investigation of prolonged fever
Helps explain persistent, unexplained symptoms.
· Guides further infectious disease evaluation
Indicates need for specialist referral if positive.
You can attend one of our UK partner clinics or arrange a home or hotel visit with a mobile phlebotomist.
You can download and share your results with your GP or infectious disease specialist.
Negative Result
No Brucella antibodies detected.
This suggests no current or past exposure, although early infection cannot be completely excluded.
Low / Borderline Levels
Low antibody levels may indicate early infection or past exposure.
Repeat testing or further investigation may be recommended.
High / Positive Levels
Elevated Brucella antibodies suggest active or recent infection.
Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, exposure history and other investigations.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
