Details about Calcium (Adjusted)
Adjusted Calcium Blood Test | London Blood Tests |
Measure adjusted calcium levels with our blood test for £29. Assess bone, parathyroid, and metabolic health. UKAS-accredited testing available.
The Adjusted Calcium Blood Test measures calcium levels in the blood after correcting for albumin, providing a more accurate assessment of calcium status. It is commonly used to evaluate bone health, parathyroid function, kidney disease, and metabolic disorders. Testing is performed in a UKAS-accredited laboratory, with an optional GP consultation.
What is an Adjusted Calcium Blood Test?
Calcium is an essential mineral involved in bone strength, muscle contraction, nerve signalling, and blood clotting. In the bloodstream, calcium exists in two main forms: bound to proteins (mainly albumin) and free (ionised).
Because low or high albumin levels can falsely alter total calcium results, laboratories calculate adjusted (corrected) calcium to reflect the true biologically active calcium level. This makes adjusted calcium particularly useful in people with chronic illness, liver disease, kidney disease, or abnormal protein levels.
The Adjusted Calcium Test is routinely used to investigate:
-
Bone metabolism and osteoporosis
-
Parathyroid gland disorders
-
Kidney disease
-
Vitamin D imbalance
-
Unexplained fatigue, cramps, or bone pain
At London Blood Tests, adjusted calcium is calculated using validated laboratory equations aligned with UK clinical guidelines.
Benefits of the Adjusted Calcium Test
-
More Accurate Calcium Assessment
Corrects calcium levels for albumin, reducing misleading results. -
Supports Bone Health Evaluation
Helps assess risk of osteoporosis and bone mineral disorders. -
Assesses Parathyroid Function
Key for diagnosing hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism. -
Monitors Kidney & Metabolic Health
Abnormal calcium is common in kidney and metabolic disorders. -
Useful With Vitamin D Testing
Complements vitamin D and phosphate measurements. -
Detects Silent Imbalances Early
Calcium abnormalities may exist without obvious symptoms. -
Optional GP Consultation for Interpretation
Results can be reviewed with a GP for targeted follow-up.
Why Do I Need an Adjusted Calcium Blood Test?
You may benefit from this test if you experience symptoms or conditions related to calcium imbalance, including:
-
Bone pain or fragility
-
Muscle cramps or spasms
-
Tingling or numbness
-
Fatigue or weakness
-
Kidney stones
-
Abnormal vitamin D levels
Testing is also recommended if you:
-
Have kidney or liver disease
-
Have suspected parathyroid disorders
-
Are monitoring osteoporosis
-
Take calcium or vitamin D supplements
-
Have abnormal albumin levels
Because calcium imbalance can affect multiple organ systems, early testing supports preventive care.

Your Adjusted Calcium Test Results – Explained
Adjusted calcium results are reported in mmol/L.
Typical UK reference range:
-
2.20 – 2.60 mmol/L
Interpretation:
-
Low adjusted calcium: vitamin D deficiency, hypoparathyroidism, kidney disease
-
Normal adjusted calcium: balanced calcium regulation
-
High adjusted calcium: hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, excess supplementation
Results should be interpreted alongside parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, phosphate, and kidney function tests.

WhatsApp UsHow to Prepare for Your Test
Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
