Details about Coconut IgE Level
What is the Coconut IgE level test?
The Coconut IgE level test is a blood test that measures Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies directed against coconut proteins. IgE antibodies are responsible for immediate-type allergic reactions, which can occur within minutes to a few hours after exposure.
Although coconut allergy is less common than other food allergies, reactions can still be significant in sensitised individuals. This test focuses on identifying a true immune-mediated coconut allergy, rather than intolerance or delayed sensitivity.
The test is used in allergy assessment for both adults and children when coconut-related reactions are suspected.
Why do I need a Coconut IgE test?
Identifying an IgE-mediated coconut allergy is important to prevent accidental exposure and reduce the risk of potentially serious allergic reactions.
You may need a Coconut IgE test if you experience symptoms shortly after consuming or coming into contact with coconut or coconut-containing products.
You may benefit from this test if you have:
- Hives or skin rash after coconut exposure
- Swelling of lips, face, tongue, or throat
- Itching or tingling in the mouth
- Wheezing, coughing, or breathing difficulty
- Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
- Dizziness or fainting
- Reactions to coconut oil or coconut-based foods
- Suspected allergy despite unclear skin testing
Unlike food intolerance, IgE-mediated allergy can worsen with repeat exposure.
Benefits of the Coconut IgE test
- Confirms true coconut allergy
Detects IgE-mediated immune response. - Assesses risk of immediate reactions
Helps evaluate potential severity. - Supports safe dietary and product avoidance
Guides elimination of coconut-containing foods and cosmetics. - Clinically recognised allergy marker
Used in standard allergy diagnostics. - Suitable for children and adults
Commonly used in paediatric and adult allergy assessment. - Simple blood test
No food challenge required. - Useful when skin tests are unsuitable
Safer option in high-risk individuals. - Distinguishes allergy from intolerance
Prevents unnecessary dietary restriction.
Step by step – how the test works
You can access Coconut IgE testing UK-wide through two options:
- Clinic appointment
Choose your nearest UK clinic, where a healthcare professional will take your blood sample. - At-home or hotel visit (£60 extra)
A qualified phlebotomist comes to your home or hotel, so you don’t need to travel.
Your sample is analysed in an accredited UK laboratory, and results are delivered securely.
Your results explained
Negative / low Coconut IgE
Suggests no evidence of IgE-mediated coconut allergy. Symptoms may be due to intolerance or non-allergic sensitivity.
Typical UK reference range:
- < 0.35 kUA/L
Moderate Coconut IgE levels
Indicate sensitisation to coconut proteins. Clinical relevance depends on symptoms and exposure history.
Typical UK interpretation:
- 0.35–3.5 kUA/L
High Coconut IgE levels
Suggest a strong allergic response and increased risk of immediate reactions to coconut.
Typical UK interpretation:
- > 3.5 kUA/L
Results should always be interpreted alongside clinical symptoms.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
