The Dengue Virus Serology blood test detects antibodies (IgM and IgG) produced by the immune system in response to infection with the Dengue virus, a mosquito-borne virus common in tropical and subtropical regions.
This test does not detect the virus itself but instead identifies the body’s immune response, making it particularly useful once symptoms have been present for several days or when confirming previous exposure. It is commonly used alongside clinical assessment in patients with unexplained fever after travel.
Dengue serology plays an important role in differentiating Dengue from other viral illnesses such as Zika, Chikungunya, or viral flu-like infections.
Dengue infection can range from a mild flu-like illness to more severe disease, including Dengue haemorrhagic fever. Early identification helps guide monitoring, follow-up, and exclusion of other serious infections.
This test is especially relevant if you have recently travelled to areas where Dengue is endemic and developed symptoms after returning to the UK.
You may need a Dengue Virus Serology test if you have:
You can choose one of two UK-wide testing options:
Your sample is analysed in a UK laboratory, and results are delivered securely once ready.
Negative (Low antibody levels)
Indicates no detectable Dengue antibodies. This may mean no prior exposure or that testing was performed too early for antibodies to develop.
Typical UK interpretation:
Positive IgM (Recent infection)
Suggests a recent or current Dengue infection. IgM antibodies usually appear within days of symptom onset.
Typical UK interpretation:
Positive IgG (Past infection)
Indicates previous exposure or infection with Dengue virus. IgG antibodies can persist for years.
Typical UK interpretation:

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
