Details about Diabetic Profile 1
What is the Diabetic Profile 1 Test?
The Diabetic Profile 1 test is a blood test that evaluates current and long-term blood sugar control by measuring Glucose and HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin). Together, these markers provide a comprehensive overview of glucose metabolism.
Glucose reflects blood sugar levels at the time of testing, while HbA1c represents the average blood glucose level over the previous 8–12 weeks. This dual approach allows both immediate and long-term assessment of diabetes risk and control.
The profile is widely used for diagnosing diabetes, identifying prediabetes and monitoring individuals with established diabetes.
Why do I need a Diabetic Profile 1 test?
You may need this test if you are at risk of diabetes, have symptoms suggestive of high blood sugar or require routine monitoring of an existing diagnosis. Diabetes can develop gradually and remain asymptomatic until complications arise.
Early detection allows lifestyle or medical intervention to prevent or delay complications affecting the heart, kidneys, nerves and eyes.
Symptoms and scenarios where testing is recommended:
- Increased thirst or frequent urination
- Unexplained fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Unexplained weight changes
- Family history of diabetes
- Overweight or obesity
- Monitoring diagnosed diabetes
- Routine metabolic health screening
What’s Tested in This Profile?
- Glucose
- HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin)
Benefits of the Diabetic Profile 1 Test
- Detects diabetes and prediabetes
Identifies abnormal glucose regulation early. - Assesses long-term blood sugar control
HbA1c reflects average levels over 2–3 months. - Supports early intervention
Enables lifestyle or treatment changes before complications. - Monitors diabetes management
Tracks response to diet, medication or insulin. - Reduces risk of complications
Supports prevention of cardiovascular and nerve damage. - Simple and widely used test
Core assessment in metabolic health. - Useful for routine screening
Suitable for ongoing health monitoring. - Clinically established markers
Standard tests used worldwide.
Step-by-Step: How Testing Works
Choose your preferred testing method
You can attend one of our UK partner clinics or arrange a home or hotel visit with a mobile phlebotomist.
Option 1 – In-Clinic Blood Draw
- Select your nearest UK clinic and book an appointment.
- A clinician or phlebotomist collects a venous blood sample.
- The sample is analysed for glucose and HbA1c.
- Results are delivered securely online.
Option 2 – Home or Hotel Phlebotomy (+£60)
- Book a UK-wide home or hotel visit at a convenient time.
- A trained phlebotomist collects your blood sample on-site.
- The sample is transported to the laboratory.
- Results are uploaded digitally without the need to travel.
Your Results Explained
Low Levels
Low glucose levels may indicate hypoglycaemia, often related to medication, fasting or metabolic conditions.
Low HbA1c suggests consistently low average blood sugar.
Typical UK reference guidance:
- Glucose (fasting): below 4.0 mmol/L – low
Normal Levels
Normal glucose and HbA1c levels indicate healthy blood sugar regulation and low diabetes risk.
Typical UK reference ranges:
- Glucose (fasting): 4.0–5.9 mmol/L
- HbA1c: < 42 mmol/mol
High Levels
Elevated glucose or HbA1c suggests impaired glucose tolerance, prediabetes or diabetes.
Persistent high levels increase the risk of long-term complications.
Typical UK reference guidance:
- HbA1c 42–47 mmol/mol: Prediabetes
- HbA1c ≥ 48 mmol/mol: Diabetes
Reference ranges may vary slightly by laboratory.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
