1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol)
This test measures 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the biologically active form of vitamin D. It is used to investigate calcium imbalance, kidney disease and...

The Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) PCR test is a molecular blood test that detects the presence of Epstein-Barr Virus DNA in the bloodstream. Unlike antibody tests, which show past exposure or immune response, PCR directly identifies active viral replication.
Epstein-Barr Virus is a member of the herpesvirus family and is extremely common worldwide.
While many infections are asymptomatic, Epstein-Barr Virus can cause infectious mononucleosis and may reactivate in immunocompromised individuals.
PCR testing is particularly valuable when assessing active infection, monitoring viral load or evaluating Epstein-Barr Virus-related complications.
You may need this test if you have symptoms suggestive of active Epstein-Barr Virus infection or if there is concern about viral reactivation. PCR is especially useful in patients with weakened immune systems, where antibody responses may be unreliable.
The test is also used in monitoring Epstein-Barr Virus viral load in transplant recipients and in investigating Epstein-Barr Virus-associated diseases.
Symptoms and scenarios where testing is recommended:
You can attend one of our UK partner clinics or arrange a home or hotel visit with a mobile phlebotomist.
Not Detected
No Epstein-Barr Virus DNA detected.
This suggests no active Epstein-Barr Virus infection at the time of testing.
Low Viral Load
Low levels of Epstein-Barr Virus DNA detected.
May indicate early infection or low-level reactivation.
High Viral Load
Significant Epstein-Barr Virus DNA detected.
Suggests active infection or reactivation and may require further clinical evaluation.
Results should be interpreted alongside symptoms, immune status and other laboratory findings.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
