Details about Epstein-Barr Virus PCR

What is the Epstein–Barr Virus PCR Test?

The Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) PCR test is a molecular blood test that detects the presence of Epstein-Barr Virus DNA in the bloodstream. Unlike antibody tests, which show past exposure or immune response, PCR directly identifies active viral replication.

Epstein-Barr Virus is a member of the herpesvirus family and is extremely common worldwide.

While many infections are asymptomatic, Epstein-Barr Virus can cause infectious mononucleosis and may reactivate in immunocompromised individuals.

PCR testing is particularly valuable when assessing active infection, monitoring viral load or evaluating Epstein-Barr Virus-related complications.

Why do I need an Epstein–Barr Virus PCR test?

You may need this test if you have symptoms suggestive of active Epstein-Barr Virus infection or if there is concern about viral reactivation. PCR is especially useful in patients with weakened immune systems, where antibody responses may be unreliable.

The test is also used in monitoring Epstein-Barr Virus viral load in transplant recipients and in investigating Epstein-Barr Virus-associated diseases.

Symptoms and scenarios where testing is recommended:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever or sore throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Enlarged liver or spleen
  • Suspected infectious mononucleosis
  • Immunosuppression or transplant monitoring
  • Unexplained systemic symptoms
  • Suspected Epstein-Barr Virus reactivation

Benefits of the Epstein–Barr Virus PCR Test

  • Detects active Epstein-Barr Virus infection
    Identifies current viral replication.
  • Distinguishes active from past infection
    Unlike antibody testing.
  • High diagnostic sensitivity and specificity
    Molecular-level detection.
  • Useful in immunocompromised patients
Where antibody tests may be unreliable.
  • Supports viral load monitoring
    Tracks disease activity over time.
  • Assists in managing Epstein-Barr Virus-related complications
    Including post-transplant conditions.
  • Rapid and accurate results
    Suitable for acute clinical decisions.
  • Clinically established diagnostic method
Widely used in infectious disease practice.

Step-by-Step: How Testing Works

Choose your preferred testing method

You can attend one of our UK partner clinics or arrange a home or hotel visit with a mobile phlebotomist.

Option 1 – In-Clinic Blood Draw

  1. Select your nearest UK clinic and book an appointment.
  2. A clinician or phlebotomist collects a venous blood sample.
  3. The sample is analysed using PCR to detect EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS DNA.
  4. Results are delivered securely online.

Option 2 – Home or Hotel Phlebotomy (+£60)

  1. Book a UK-wide home or hotel visit at a convenient time.
  2. A trained phlebotomist collects your blood sample on-site.
  3. The sample is transported to the laboratory.
  4. Results are uploaded digitally without the need to travel.

Your Results Explained

Not Detected

No Epstein-Barr Virus DNA detected.
This suggests no active Epstein-Barr Virus infection at the time of testing.

Low Viral Load

Low levels of Epstein-Barr Virus DNA detected.
May indicate early infection or low-level reactivation.

High Viral Load

Significant Epstein-Barr Virus DNA detected.
Suggests active infection or reactivation and may require further clinical evaluation.

Results should be interpreted alongside symptoms, immune status and other laboratory findings.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
