Details about Gender Scan (16-40 weeks)

What is a Gender Scan (16–40 Weeks)?

A Gender Scan is a non-invasive pregnancy ultrasound carried out from 16 weeks onwards, when the baby’s genital anatomy is typically developed enough to allow identification of sex.

During the scan, the sonographer carefully assesses the baby’s position and anatomy to determine whether the baby is male or female, when visibility allows. While the primary purpose is gender identification, the scan also provides reassurance by confirming heartbeat, movement, and general wellbeing.

The scan is safe, painless, and uses ultrasound technology, with no radiation exposure.

When a Gender Scan is recommended

A Gender Scan can be performed anytime between 16 and 40 weeks of pregnancy, depending on preference and baby’s position.

You may choose to have this scan if you:

  • Wish to find out your baby’s sex
  • Are planning a gender reveal
  • Want reassurance between routine pregnancy scans
  • Are attending with a partner or family member
  • Have had earlier scans where gender was not visible
  • Want confirmation later in pregnancy
  • Prefer a relaxed, non-diagnostic scan experience

What the Gender Scan includes

The scan focuses on:

  • Identification of fetal sex (when visible)
  • Confirmation of fetal heartbeat
  • Observation of fetal movement
  • Assessment of baby’s position
  • General reassurance of pregnancy progress

It is important to note that the scan is not intended to replace the anomaly scan or other diagnostic pregnancy ultrasounds.

How the Gender Scan is performed

Home-Based Ultrasound Scans (UK-wide)

  • Book your ultrasound appointment online or by phone
  • A qualified clinician travels to your home or chosen location
  • The scan is performed in the comfort and privacy of your home
  • Scan duration varies by examination type (typically 10–30 minutes)
  • Findings are explained during or shortly after the scan

Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided as home-visit services only. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to access diagnostic imaging without attending a clinic.

Understanding your Gender Scan results

Gender clearly identified

The baby’s genital anatomy is visible and sex can be confidently identified.

Typical outcome:

  • Baby identified as male or female

Gender not clearly visible

Baby’s position may limit visibility.

Typical outcome:

  • Gender not confirmed at this time

A repeat scan may be offered if appropriate.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
