A Groin & Hernia Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the groin region. It does not use radiation and is considered very safe.
The scan evaluates structures in the inguinal and femoral regions, including muscles, tendons, blood vessels, lymph nodes and the abdominal wall. It is particularly effective at detecting inguinal and femoral hernias, even those that are small or only appear during movement or straining.
Because ultrasound is dynamic, the clinician can assess the groin at rest and during coughing or straining, improving diagnostic accuracy compared to static imaging.
A groin and hernia ultrasound scan is recommended when symptoms suggest a possible hernia or another cause of groin discomfort. It helps identify the cause of pain or swelling and whether surgical referral is required.
You may need a groin and hernia ultrasound scan if you experience:
Early diagnosis helps prevent complications such as hernia incarceration or strangulation.
Clinic-Based Groin & Hernia Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
Groin & hernia ultrasound scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available. Services are available across the UK.
Results are interpreted based on tissue movement, anatomy and defect presence, rather than numerical values.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
