Details about Hepatitis A Immunity (IgG/IgM)
Understanding the Hepatitis A Immunity (IgG/IgM) blood test
The Hepatitis A Immunity (IgG/IgM) blood test measures two types of antibodies produced in response to Hepatitis A virus infection: IgG antibodies and IgM antibodies. Together, these markers provide a clear picture of both immune protection and recent exposure.
IgG antibodies indicate long-term immunity, either from past natural infection or successful vaccination.
IgM antibodies indicate a recent or acute Hepatitis A infection, usually appearing early in the course of illness.
By testing both antibodies together, this profile allows accurate differentiation between immunity, recent infection, and susceptibility, making it a comprehensive assessment of Hepatitis A status.
When a Hepatitis A Immunity (IgG/IgM) test is recommended
This test is recommended when there is a need to confirm immunity to Hepatitis A, investigate possible recent infection, or clarify Hepatitis A status following symptoms, exposure, or vaccination.
Hepatitis A is transmitted primarily through contaminated food or water. While it does not cause chronic infection, it can lead to significant short-term illness, making early identification and immunity confirmation important.
Testing may be appropriate if you:
- Want to confirm immunity after Hepatitis A vaccination
- Have symptoms suggestive of acute hepatitis
- Have unexplained abnormal liver function tests
- Have been exposed to someone with Hepatitis A
- Have recently travelled to higher-risk regions
- Work in food handling, healthcare, or childcare
- Need reassurance about protection against Hepatitis A
- Require occupational or public health screening
Benefits of the Hepatitis A Immunity (IgG/IgM) test
- Confirms protective immunity to Hepatitis A
IgG antibodies indicate long-term protection. - Identifies recent or acute infection
IgM antibodies detect early infection. - Clarifies infection timing
Distinguishes immunity from active illness. - Supports investigation of liver abnormalities
Useful in unexplained hepatitis presentations. - Essential for travel and occupational screening
Confirms protection in higher-risk settings. - Prevents unnecessary vaccination
Identifies existing immunity. - Simple blood test with no preparation required
No fasting or lifestyle changes needed. - Provides reassurance and clear clinical answers
Reduces uncertainty for patients and clinicians.
How the test is carried out
We offer two convenient UK-wide testing options:
Clinic-based blood testing
- Choose your nearest UK clinic
- A healthcare professional collects a blood sample
- The sample is analysed in a certified laboratory
- Results are issued once testing is complete
Home or hotel blood collection (+£60)
- A qualified phlebotomist visits your home, workplace, or hotel
- Blood is collected at a time convenient for you
- No clinic visit required
- Available nationwide across the UK
Both options use the same laboratory standards and clinical accuracy.
Understanding your Hepatitis A Immunity (IgG/IgM) results
IgG and IgM both negative
This indicates no immunity and no recent infection. You are susceptible to Hepatitis A.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Not immune
- Vaccination may be recommended
IgG positive and IgM negative
This indicates protective immunity due to past infection or vaccination. There is no current infection.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Immune
- No further action required
IgG positive and IgM positive
This pattern indicates a recent or ongoing Hepatitis A infection, often during early recovery.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Recent or acute infection
- Clinical follow-up may be advised
IgG negative and IgM positive
This indicates a very recent acute Hepatitis A infection before long-term immunity has developed.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Acute infection
- Medical assessment recommended

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
