The Hepatitis C Virus Antibodies blood test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Hepatitis C Virus infection. These antibodies usually develop within weeks to months after exposure and remain detectable long-term, even if the virus has been cleared.
This test does not detect the virus itself. Instead, it indicates whether a person has ever been exposed to Hepatitis C Virus at any point in their life. A positive antibody result therefore requires follow-up viral load testing to determine whether infection is currently active.
Because Hepatitis C infection is often silent for many years, antibody testing is a critical screening tool for early identification and prevention of long-term liver damage.
This test is recommended as a first-line investigation when there is a possibility of Hepatitis C exposure or unexplained liver abnormalities. Many people with Hepatitis C have no symptoms until advanced liver disease develops, making screening essential.
Antibody testing is also widely used in routine health checks, occupational screening, and before certain medical procedures.
Testing may be appropriate if you:
We offer two convenient UK-wide testing options:
Clinic-based blood testing
Home or hotel blood collection (+£60)
Both options use the same laboratory methods and clinical standards.
Antibodies not detected (Negative result)
No Hepatitis C Virus antibodies were detected. This indicates no evidence of past exposure.
Typical UK laboratory reporting:
If recent exposure is suspected, repeat testing may be advised after the window period.
Borderline result
A borderline result means antibody levels are not clearly positive or negative. This may occur during early antibody development or due to technical variation.
Typical UK laboratory reporting:
Repeat testing or confirmatory testing is usually recommended.
Antibodies detected (Positive result)
The presence of Hepatitis C Virus antibodies indicates previous exposure to the virus. This does not confirm active infection.
Typical UK laboratory reporting:
A Hepatitis C Virus Quantification (Viral Load) test is required to determine whether infection is currently active.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
