The Hepatitis C Virus Quantification (Viral Load) test is a molecular blood test that measures the exact amount of Hepatitis C Virus genetic material present in the bloodstream. Unlike antibody tests, which only indicate exposure, this test confirms active infection and quantifies viral activity.
This test uses highly sensitive molecular technology to detect and measure viral RNA. The result is reported as an exact numerical value, allowing clinicians to assess disease activity, infectivity risk, and response to antiviral treatment.
Hepatitis C infection may remain asymptomatic for many years while silently causing liver inflammation and damage. Viral load testing plays a central role in diagnosis, monitoring, and long-term management of Hepatitis C infection.
This test is required whenever active Hepatitis C infection is suspected or needs confirmation. It is also essential for individuals who have previously tested positive for Hepatitis C antibodies, as antibody positivity alone does not confirm ongoing infection.
Viral load testing is also used throughout treatment to assess response to antiviral therapy and confirm viral clearance.
Testing may be appropriate if you:
We offer two convenient UK-wide testing options:
Clinic-based blood testing
Home or hotel blood collection (+£60)
Both options use identical laboratory methods and clinical standards.
Virus not detected
No Hepatitis C Virus RNA was detected in the blood sample. This indicates no active infection, either due to spontaneous clearance or successful treatment.
Typical UK laboratory reporting:
Low viral load
A low viral load indicates active infection with a smaller amount of circulating virus. This does not necessarily correlate with symptom severity or liver damage.
Typical UK reporting:
Clinical context and follow-up are important.
High viral load
A high viral load indicates active infection with a higher level of viral replication. Viral load alone does not predict liver damage severity but is important for monitoring and treatment response.
Typical UK reporting:
Further assessment and treatment planning are usually advised.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
