The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 and Type 2 by Polymerase Chain Reaction (Urine) test is a molecular diagnostic test designed to detect viral DNA directly, rather than antibodies. This means it identifies current, active infection, not past exposure.
Unlike blood antibody tests, which measure the immune response, this urine-based Polymerase Chain Reaction test detects the presence of Herpes Simplex Virus genetic material itself. This makes it particularly useful during early infection, before antibodies have developed, or when symptoms are present but blood tests are inconclusive.
Because urine sampling is non-invasive and convenient, this test is often preferred when genital symptoms are present, when lesions are internal, or when swab testing is not feasible.
This test is appropriate if you want to confirm whether active viral shedding is occurring. It is especially valuable when symptoms are recent, atypical, or when antibody tests may not yet be reliable.
Herpes Simplex Virus infections do not always cause visible sores. In some individuals, symptoms may be internal, mild, or mistaken for urinary or genital irritation. Molecular testing provides clarity by identifying the virus directly, rather than relying on immune response timing.
Testing may be appropriate if you experience:
· Direct detection of active infection
Identifies viral DNA rather than immune response.
· Highly sensitive diagnostic method
Capable of detecting low levels of virus.
· Effective during early infection
Useful before antibodies have developed.
· Non-invasive sample collection
Simple urine sample, no blood draw required.
· Useful when lesions cannot be swabbed
Ideal if sores are internal or healed.
· Clear differentiation between active and past infection
Confirms current viral presence only.
· Supports timely clinical decisions
Enables appropriate guidance and follow-up.
· Discreet and convenient testing option
Suitable for patients seeking privacy and comfort.
We provide two UK-wide testing options:
Clinic-based urine testing
Home or hotel sample collection (+£60)
Both options use the same laboratory methodology and quality standards.
Virus not detected
No Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 or Type 2 genetic material was identified in the urine sample. This suggests no active viral shedding at the time of testing.
Laboratory reporting standard:
If symptoms persist, repeat testing or alternative testing methods may be recommended.
Indeterminate result
An indeterminate result means that viral material was detected at a very low level or the sample quality was insufficient for a definitive conclusion.
Laboratory reporting standard:
Repeat testing is usually advised to confirm status.
Virus detected
Viral genetic material from Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 or Type 2 has been identified, indicating active infection or viral shedding at the time of testing.
Laboratory reporting standard:
Clinical correlation and further advice may be recommended depending on symptoms and history.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
