A Hip Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the hip joint and surrounding soft tissues. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionising radiation and is considered very safe.
The scan allows clinicians to assess structures such as hip tendons, muscles, bursae, ligaments and joint fluid. It is particularly effective for identifying soft tissue conditions, inflammation and fluid collections around the hip.
Hip ultrasound is widely used in musculoskeletal medicine and orthopaedics and is suitable for both adults and children, including infant hip assessments when clinically indicated.
A Hip Ultrasound Scan is recommended when hip pain, swelling or reduced movement suggests a soft tissue or inflammatory condition rather than a bone problem. It helps identify the cause of symptoms quickly and accurately.
You may need a Hip Ultrasound Scan if you experience:
Early imaging supports prompt treatment and prevents symptom progression.
Clinic-Based Hip Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
Hip ultrasound scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available. Services are available across the UK.
Hip ultrasound results are based on structure, movement and tissue appearance, rather than numerical values.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
