Details about HPV DNA Screen
What is the HPV DNA Screen?
The HPV DNA Screen is a molecular test that detects the presence of human papillomavirus genetic material in cervical or genital samples. HPV is a very common sexually transmitted virus, with certain high-risk types associated with cervical cancer and other anogenital cancers.
Unlike cytology (smear tests), HPV DNA testing identifies viral infection directly, even before cellular changes occur. This allows earlier risk assessment and more effective screening.
The test is widely used in cervical screening programmes and sexual health assessments.
Why do I need an HPV DNA Screen?
You may need this test to assess your risk of HPV-related disease, particularly cervical cancer. HPV infection is often asymptomatic, meaning many people are unaware they carry the virus.
Early detection of high-risk HPV allows closer monitoring, timely intervention and reassurance when results are negative.
Symptoms and scenarios where testing is recommended:
- Routine cervical screening
- Abnormal smear test results
- Post-treatment follow-up for cervical abnormalities
- New or multiple sexual partners
- Immune suppression
- Persistent genital symptoms
- Concern about HPV exposure
- Cancer prevention screening
Benefits of the HPV DNA Screen
- Detects high-risk HPV types
Identifies strains linked to cancer risk. - Earlier detection than cytology alone
Finds infection before cell changes occur. - Improves cervical cancer prevention
Enables targeted follow-up and monitoring. - High sensitivity molecular testing
Accurate detection of viral DNA. - Supports evidence-based screening
Used in national screening programmes. - Reassures when negative
Lowers cancer risk anxiety. - Useful in follow-up testing
Monitors viral clearance after treatment. - Non-invasive sample collection
Simple cervical or genital sampling.
Step-by-Step: How Testing Works
Choose your preferred testing method
Testing is performed using a cervical or genital sample collected in clinic.
Sample Collection and Analysis
- A clinician collects a cervical or genital sample.
- The sample is sent to the laboratory.
- HPV DNA is detected using PCR technology.
- Results are delivered securely online.
Your Results Explained
HPV Not Detected
No high-risk HPV DNA found.
This indicates a low risk of HPV-related cervical disease at this time.
High-Risk HPV Detected
High-risk HPV DNA identified.
Further monitoring, repeat testing or cytology may be recommended.
Persistent HPV Detection
HPV detected on repeated testing.
This may require closer follow-up due to increased risk of cellular changes.
UK management follows national cervical screening guidelines.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
