A Kidneys, Ureters & Bladder (KUB) Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the urinary tract. It does not use ionising radiation and is considered very safe.
This scan assesses the kidneys, ureters (the tubes connecting kidneys to the bladder) and the bladder itself. It allows clinicians to evaluate organ size, structure, fluid flow, bladder volume and post-void residual urine.
KUB ultrasound is commonly used as a first-line investigation for urinary symptoms, kidney problems and abnormal blood or urine test results.
A KUB ultrasound scan is recommended when symptoms or test results suggest a possible issue affecting the kidneys or urinary system. It helps identify the cause of urinary symptoms quickly and accurately.
You may need a KUB ultrasound scan if you experience:
Early imaging supports timely diagnosis and helps prevent complications such as kidney damage.
Clinic-Based KUB Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
KUB ultrasound scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available. Services are available across the UK.
KUB ultrasound results are interpreted based on organ size, structure and urinary flow, rather than numerical values.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
