Details about Lymph Node (2 Areas)
What is a Lymph Node Ultrasound (2 Areas)?
A Lymph Node Ultrasound (2 Areas) is an imaging examination that uses ultrasound technology to evaluate lymph nodes in two selected anatomical regions, such as the neck, armpits, groin, or other accessible nodal areas.
The scan assesses lymph node size, shape, internal structure, and vascularity, helping clinicians determine whether nodes appear reactive and benign or whether features are present that may require further investigation. Ultrasound provides real-time imaging without radiation and is suitable for both initial assessment and follow-up.
This targeted approach is ideal when lymph node changes are localised to two areas rather than widespread.
When a Lymph Node Ultrasound (2 Areas) is recommended
This scan is recommended when lymph node enlargement or symptoms are present in two specific regions.
You may be advised to have this scan if you:
- Have enlarged lymph nodes in two areas
- Have lymph nodes that persist beyond expected recovery time
- Experience localised pain or tenderness in nodal regions
- Have had a recent infection with residual node enlargement
- Are being monitored for inflammatory or autoimmune conditions
- Need follow-up of previously identified lymph nodes
- Have abnormal findings on clinical examination
- Require reassurance about localised lymphadenopathy
What the Lymph Node Ultrasound assesses
The scan evaluates:
- Lymph node size and symmetry
- Shape and border definition
- Internal architecture and fatty hilum
- Blood flow patterns within nodes
- Signs of inflammation or abnormal features
- Comparison between the two assessed areas
Benefits of a Lymph Node Ultrasound (2 Areas)
- Targeted assessment of two regions
Focuses on areas of clinical concern. - Non-invasive and painless
No needles or radiation exposure. - Helps differentiate benign from concerning features
Supports appropriate next steps. - Real-time imaging
Immediate evaluation of structure and blood flow. - Safe and repeatable
Suitable for monitoring over time. - Supports early identification of abnormalities
Enables timely referral if required. - Quick and well tolerated
Usually completed within 20–30 minutes. - Widely used across medical specialties
Including general medicine, oncology and rheumatology.
How the Lymph Node Ultrasound (2 Areas) is performed

Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided as home-visit services only. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to access diagnostic imaging without attending a clinic.
Understanding your Lymph Node Ultrasound results
Normal lymph nodes
Nodes appear within expected size and show normal internal features.
Typical report:
- Lymph nodes within normal limits
Reactive or inflammatory lymph nodes
Nodes are enlarged but display features consistent with a benign response.
Typical report:
- Reactive lymphadenopathy
Atypical lymph node features
Changes in size, shape or internal structure may warrant further assessment.
Typical report:
- Atypical lymph node features – further evaluation advised
Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, blood tests and clinical history.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
