Details about Lymph Node Ultrasound (1 area)
What is a Lymph Node Ultrasound Scan (1 Area)?
A lymph node ultrasound scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of lymph nodes beneath the skin. It does not use radiation and is considered very safe.
A one-area lymph node ultrasound focuses on a specific region, such as the neck (cervical), armpit (axillary), groin (inguinal), supraclavicular area or behind the ear. The scan assesses the size, shape, internal structure and blood flow of lymph nodes.
This test is commonly used as a first-line investigation when lymph nodes are enlarged, tender, persistent or unexplained.
Why do I need a Lymph Node Ultrasound Scan?
A lymph node ultrasound scan is recommended when swollen glands persist, change in size or are associated with symptoms such as pain, infection or unexplained illness. It helps identify the likely cause of lymph node enlargement and whether further tests are needed.
You may need a lymph node ultrasound scan if you have:
- Swollen lymph nodes lasting more than a few weeks
- Painful or tender glands
- Enlarged lymph nodes following infection
- Firm, hard or fixed lymph nodes
- Rapidly growing lymph nodes
- Lymph node swelling with fever or fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss or night sweats
- Localised swelling in the neck, armpit or groin
- Monitoring of known lymph node changes
- Reassurance for persistent swollen glands
Early assessment helps rule out serious causes and provides peace of mind.
Benefits of a Lymph Node Ultrasound Scan
- Fast, targeted assessment
Focuses precisely on the affected lymph node area. - No radiation exposure
Completely safe for repeat imaging. - Real-time evaluation
Allows immediate assessment of lymph node structure. - Differentiates reactive vs suspicious nodes
Helps identify infection-related changes versus concerning features. - Guides further management
Determines whether biopsy or follow-up is needed. - Non-invasive and painless
No needles or injections required. - Cost-effective investigation
Often avoids unnecessary advanced imaging. - Same-day explanation
Findings are usually discussed during or shortly after the scan.

Your Lymph Node Ultrasound Results Explained
Lymph node ultrasound results are interpreted based on size, shape, internal architecture and blood flow, not numerical values.
Normal / Reactive Lymph Nodes
What this means:
- Small or mildly enlarged nodes
- Preserved internal structure
- Features consistent with infection or inflammation
What it suggests:
Usually benign and often related to recent or current infection.
Mild to Moderate Abnormal Findings
What this may show:
- Enlarged reactive lymph nodes
- Changes due to chronic inflammation
- Mild structural alteration
What it suggests:
May require monitoring or follow-up imaging depending on symptoms.
Significant or Concerning Findings
What this may show:
- Markedly enlarged nodes
- Loss of normal internal structure
- Increased or abnormal blood flow
What it suggests:
Further tests such as biopsy, blood tests or specialist referral may be recommended.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
