Details about Lymph Node (Whole Body)
What is a Whole-Body Lymph Node Scan?
A Whole-Body Lymph Node scan is a non-invasive ultrasound examination that assesses lymph nodes across multiple regions of the body. Commonly examined areas include the neck (cervical), armpits (axillary), groin (inguinal), abdomen, and other accessible nodal groups.
The scan evaluates lymph node size, shape, internal structure, and blood flow, helping differentiate between reactive (benign) enlargement and features that may require further investigation. Ultrasound does not use radiation and provides real-time imaging, making it suitable for both initial assessment and follow-up.
This scan is often used when lymph node enlargement is generalised, unexplained, or persistent.
When a Whole-Body Lymph Node scan is recommended
A whole-body assessment is recommended when lymph node changes are widespread, unclear in cause, or require monitoring.
You may be advised to have this scan if you:
- Have enlarged lymph nodes in more than one area
- Have lymph nodes that remain enlarged over time
- Experience unexplained weight loss, fever or night sweats
- Have a recent or ongoing infection with persistent nodes
- Are being monitored for inflammatory or autoimmune conditions
- Require follow-up of previously identified lymph nodes
- Need reassurance after abnormal clinical examination
- Are undergoing evaluation for systemic illness
What the Whole-Body Lymph Node scan assesses
The scan evaluates:
- Lymph node size and distribution
- Shape and internal architecture
- Presence of fatty hilum
- Vascular patterns within nodes
- Signs of inflammation or necrosis
- Comparison across different body regions
Benefits of a Whole-Body Lymph Node Scan
- Comprehensive lymphatic assessment
Evaluates multiple nodal regions in one examination. - Non-invasive and painless
No needles or radiation exposure. - Helps distinguish benign from concerning features
Supports clinical decision-making. - Useful for monitoring over time
Ideal for follow-up scans. - Real-time imaging
Immediate assessment of structure and blood flow. - Safe and repeatable
Suitable for ongoing surveillance. - Supports early detection of abnormalities
Enables timely referral when needed. - Widely used across medical specialties
Including general medicine, oncology and rheumatology.
How the Whole-Body Lymph Node scan is performed
Home-Based Ultrasound Scans (UK-wide)
- Book your ultrasound appointment online or by phone
- A qualified clinician travels to your home or chosen location
- The scan is performed in the comfort and privacy of your home
- Scan duration varies by examination type (typically 10–30 minutes)
- Findings are explained during or shortly after the scan
Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided as home-visit services only. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to access diagnostic imaging without attending a clinic.
Understanding your Whole-Body Lymph Node scan results
Normal lymph nodes
Nodes are within expected size and have normal internal features.
Typical report:
- Lymph nodes within normal limits
Reactive or inflammatory nodes
Nodes appear enlarged but with features suggesting a benign response to infection or inflammation.
Typical report:
- Reactive lymphadenopathy
Atypical or concerning features
Changes in size, shape or structure may require further evaluation.
Typical report:
- Atypical lymph nodes identified – further assessment advised
Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, blood tests and clinical history.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
