The Malarial Parasites blood test is used to identify Plasmodium parasites in the bloodstream, which are responsible for malaria infection. Malaria is transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito and can become life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
This test typically involves microscopic examination of blood films and/or advanced laboratory techniques to detect the presence of malaria parasites. It helps confirm whether symptoms such as fever are caused by malaria rather than other viral or bacterial infections.
Early testing is critical, as malaria symptoms can progress rapidly, particularly with Plasmodium falciparum, the most severe form of the disease.
This test is recommended whenever malaria is suspected, especially following travel to endemic regions. Symptoms may appear days to weeks after exposure and can initially be non-specific.
Testing may be appropriate if you:
We offer two UK-wide testing options, depending on clinical urgency:
Clinic-based blood testing
Home or hotel blood collection (+£60)
Important: If malaria is strongly suspected or symptoms are severe, immediate hospital assessment is advised.
No parasites detected
No malaria parasites identified at the time of testing.
Typical interpretation:
Repeat testing may be required if symptoms persist, as parasite levels can fluctuate.
Malaria parasites detected
Presence of malaria parasites confirms active malaria infection.
Typical interpretation:
Urgent medical treatment is required.
Inconclusive or low-level detection
Low parasite levels may be detected early in infection.
Typical interpretation:
Repeat testing and clinical monitoring are recommended.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
