Details about Meningococcal Antibodies
Understanding the Meningococcal Antibodies blood test
The Meningococcal Antibodies blood test measures antibody levels directed against Neisseria meningitidis, the bacterium responsible for meningococcal disease. This serious infection can cause meningitis and septicaemia and may progress rapidly.
This test is used to assess whether an individual has protective immunity, most commonly following vaccination. It does not diagnose active infection. Instead, it evaluates the immune system’s ability to recognise and defend against meningococcal bacteria.
Antibody testing is particularly useful in people with increased infection risk, uncertain vaccination history, or suspected reduced immune response to vaccines.
When a Meningococcal Antibodies test is recommended
This test is recommended when there is a need to confirm immunity to meningococcal disease or to evaluate vaccine response.
Testing may be appropriate if you:
- Want to confirm protection after meningococcal vaccination
- Have an unclear or incomplete vaccination history
- Are at higher risk due to travel, work, or living conditions
- Are immunocompromised or have reduced immune function
- Experience recurrent or severe bacterial infections
- Are being assessed by an immunologist
- Need reassurance about meningococcal protection
- Are considering booster vaccination
Benefits of the Meningococcal Antibodies test
- Confirms protective immunity
Indicates whether antibody levels are sufficient. - Assesses vaccine response
Helps determine effectiveness of vaccination. - Guides booster vaccination decisions
Identifies waning or inadequate immunity. - Useful in immunodeficiency assessment
Supports evaluation of immune function. - Non-invasive assessment of protection
Requires only a blood sample. - Supports infection prevention strategies
Particularly valuable for high-risk individuals. - Simple blood test with no preparation required
No fasting or lifestyle changes needed. - Provides reassurance or clinical direction
Clarifies immune status accurately.
How the test is carried out
We offer two convenient UK-wide testing options:
Clinic-based blood testing
- Choose your nearest UK clinic
- A healthcare professional collects a blood sample
- The sample is analysed in a certified laboratory
- Results are issued once testing is complete
Home or hotel blood collection (+£60)
- A qualified phlebotomist visits your home, workplace, or hotel
- Blood is collected at a time convenient for you
- No clinic visit required
- Available nationwide across the UK
Both options provide the same laboratory accuracy and clinical reliability.
Understanding your Meningococcal Antibodies test results
Low or non-protective antibody levels
Low antibody levels suggest insufficient immunity against meningococcal bacteria.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Below protective threshold
A booster vaccination may be recommended depending on risk.
Protective antibody levels
Protective levels indicate adequate immunity against meningococcal disease.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Protective
No further action is usually required unless risk factors change.
High antibody levels
High levels indicate strong immune protection, often following recent vaccination or robust immune response.
Typical UK interpretation:
- Strong immunity present
This confirms effective vaccine response.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
