SelectedThe Mycoplasma genitalium PCR test detects the DNA of Mycoplasma genitalium, a sexually transmitted bacterium that can infect the urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat. It is increasingly recognised as a cause of persistent or recurrent genital symptoms.
Because Mycoplasma genitalium grows very slowly and poorly in culture, PCR testing is the preferred and most accurate diagnostic method. The test can be performed using urine samples or site-specific swabs, depending on clinical indication.
Mycoplasma genitalium often causes mild or no symptoms and is frequently missed on routine STI screening. When untreated, it can lead to ongoing symptoms and complications.
You may need this test if you:
Have persistent urethral or genital symptoms
Experience burning on urination
Have unusual discharge
Have pelvic or testicular discomfort
Have symptoms that persist despite negative chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests
Have a partner diagnosed with Mycoplasma genitalium
Want comprehensive STI screening
Testing helps identify a treatable cause of ongoing or unexplained symptoms.
Highly sensitive PCR detection
Accurately identifies low-level infection.
Detects a commonly missed STI
Not included in many standard panels.
Suitable for symptomatic and asymptomatic testing
Identifies silent infections.
Useful in persistent or recurrent symptoms
Helps explain ongoing issues.
Non-invasive sample options
Often performed using urine.
Widely recommended in sexual health
Recognised emerging STI.
Supports appropriate treatment selection
Prevents unnecessary antibiotics.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
