Details about Peripheral Arterial Doppler Ultrasound – ABPI One Limb

What is a Peripheral Arterial Doppler Ultrasound and ABPI – One Limb?

This investigation combines arterial Doppler ultrasound imaging with Ankle–Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) measurements to assess arterial circulation in one lower limb.

The Doppler ultrasound visualises blood flow within the leg arteries, helping identify narrowing, blockages, or reduced circulation. ABPI compares blood pressure at the ankle of the affected leg with the arm to provide a numerical measure of blood supply.

A one-limb assessment is appropriate when symptoms, findings, or concerns are localised to a single leg, allowing focused and efficient evaluation.

When this test is recommended

A Peripheral Arterial Doppler and ABPI – One Limb is recommended when there is concern about reduced arterial circulation in one leg.

You may be referred for this test if you:

  • Experience leg pain when walking affecting one leg
  • Have coldness or colour changes in one foot or leg
  • Have a non-healing wound or ulcer on one leg
  • Have diabetes with one-sided circulation concerns
  • Have reduced or absent pulses on one side
  • Have previous vascular intervention on one leg
  • Require targeted follow-up of known arterial disease
  • Have symptoms limited to one limb

Benefits of a Peripheral Arterial Doppler and ABPI – One Limb

  • Targeted assessment of the affected leg
Focuses on the symptomatic limb only.
  • Detects arterial narrowing or blockage
    Identifies peripheral arterial disease.
  • Includes objective ABPI measurement
    Quantifies severity of circulation impairment.
  • Non-invasive and painless
    No needles or radiation.
  • Supports early diagnosis of PAD
    Enables timely management.
  • Guides treatment and monitoring decisions
    Supports vascular care planning.
  • Safe and repeatable
    Suitable for follow-up assessment.
  • Widely used in diabetic and vascular care
    Standard lower-limb circulation test.

How the test is performed

Home-Based Ultrasound Scans (UK-wide)

  • Book your ultrasound appointment online or by phone
  • A qualified clinician travels to your home or chosen location
  • The scan is performed in the comfort and privacy of your home
  • Scan duration varies by examination type (typically 10–30 minutes)
  • Findings are explained during or shortly after the scan

Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided as home-visit services only. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to access diagnostic imaging without attending a clinic.

Understanding your results

Normal circulation

Blood flow is normal and ABPI values fall within the healthy range.

Typical values:

  • ABPI ~ 1.0–1.3

Mild to moderate arterial disease

Reduced flow or lower ABPI values indicate partial arterial narrowing.

Typical values:

  • ABPI ~ 0.5–0.9

Severe arterial disease

Significantly reduced flow suggests advanced peripheral arterial disease.

Typical values:

  • ABPI below 0.5

Results are interpreted alongside symptoms and clinical history.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
