Details about Skin and Soft Tissue: Lipoma, Tumour Biopsy/Resection
What are Lipoma & Tumour Biopsy/Resection procedures?
These are minor surgical procedures used to diagnose or treat benign and suspicious soft tissue lumps and skin tumours. A lipoma is a benign fatty lump, while tumour biopsy or resection involves removing part or all of a lesion to establish a diagnosis or achieve definitive treatment.
Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic in a clinic setting. When tissue is removed, it is routinely sent for histological analysis to confirm the diagnosis and guide further care.
Why might I need a lipoma excision or tumour biopsy?
Soft tissue lumps and skin tumours can change over time. While many are benign, features such as growth, pain, firmness, or skin changes may require surgical assessment.
You may need assessment or a procedure if you have:
- A growing or painful lump
- A soft tissue mass suspected to be a lipoma
- A skin lesion that has changed in size, colour, or shape
- A lump causing discomfort, pressure, or cosmetic concern
- A lesion requiring biopsy to exclude malignancy
- A previously diagnosed tumour needing complete removal
Procedures we offer
Excision of Lipoma
Lipomas are benign fatty growths that may increase in size or cause discomfort.
What it involves:
- Local anaesthetic
- Small incision over the lump
- Complete removal of the lipoma
- Closure with sutures
- Histology if clinically indicated
Removal is usually curative, with a low recurrence rate.
Tumour Biopsy
A biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue to establish a diagnosis.
What it involves:
- Local anaesthetic
- Punch, incisional, or excisional biopsy (depending on lesion)
- Tissue sent for histology
- Results guide further treatment
Biopsy is essential when the nature of a lesion is uncertain.
Tumour Resection
Resection involves complete removal of a skin or soft tissue tumour.
What it involves:
- Local anaesthetic
- Complete excision with appropriate margins
- Sutured wound closure
- Histology to confirm diagnosis and margins
Early resection improves outcomes and reduces recurrence risk.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
