Details about Skin and Soft Tissue: Skin Biopsy (10 specimens)
What is a Skin Biopsy (10 specimens)?
A Skin Biopsy is a minor surgical procedure used to obtain small samples of skin for laboratory (histological) examination. The 10-specimen option allows multiple lesions or areas to be sampled during the same appointment, improving diagnostic efficiency and patient convenience.
Biopsies may be performed using punch, shave, incisional, or excisional techniques, depending on the lesion type and clinical indication. All samples are labelled separately and analysed individually by the laboratory.
Why might I need multiple skin biopsies?
Some conditions affect more than one area of skin, or require sampling from different sites to confirm a diagnosis. Multiple biopsies may also be needed when lesions vary in appearance or behaviour.
You may require up to 10 skin biopsies if you have:
- Multiple suspicious or changing skin lesions
- Widespread or patchy inflammatory skin conditions
- Non-healing or recurrent skin lesions
- Lesions with different colours, shapes, or textures
- Conditions requiring mapping or comparison of sites
- Ongoing symptoms with unclear diagnosis
Biopsy techniques used
Depending on the lesion and location, one or more of the following may be used:
Punch biopsy
Removes a small, full-thickness core of skin for detailed analysis.
Shave biopsy
Removes a superficial portion of the lesion, often used for raised or superficial growths.
Incisional biopsy
Samples part of a larger lesion when full removal is not appropriate initially.
Excisional biopsy
Removes the entire lesion with margins, often used when malignancy is suspected.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
