Details about Skin and Soft Tissue: Skin Biopsy (3 specimens)
What is a Skin Biopsy (3 specimens)?
A Skin Biopsy is a minor surgical procedure used to remove small samples of skin for laboratory (histological) examination. The 3-specimen option is suitable when multiple lesions or different skin areas require assessment during the same appointment.
Biopsies are performed using punch, shave, incisional, or excisional techniques, depending on the lesion type, size, and location. Each specimen is clearly labelled and reported separately to ensure precise correlation with biopsy sites.
Why might I need three skin biopsies?
Some skin conditions are multifocal or variable in appearance, requiring more than one sample to reach a confident diagnosis. Sampling three sites in one visit avoids delays and repeat procedures.
You may need three skin biopsies if you have:
- Three suspicious or changing skin lesions
- Lesions with different colours, textures, or growth patterns
- A widespread or patchy rash affecting multiple areas
- Ongoing symptoms with unclear diagnosis
- One lesion requiring full excision and others needing sampling
- Previous inconclusive or partial biopsy results
Biopsy techniques used
The technique is chosen based on clinical indication:
Punch biopsy
Removes a small, full-thickness core of skin for detailed analysis.
Shave biopsy
Samples superficial or raised lesions.
Incisional biopsy
Removes part of a larger lesion when full excision is not appropriate.
Excisional biopsy
Removes the entire lesion with margins, often used when malignancy is suspected.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
