Details about Skin and Soft Tissue: Skin Biopsy (5 specimens)

What is a Skin Biopsy (5 specimens)?

A Skin Biopsy is a minor surgical procedure used to obtain skin samples for laboratory (histological) examination. The 5-specimen option is suitable for patients with multiple lesions or widespread skin changes requiring assessment during the same appointment.

Biopsies are performed using punch, shave, incisional, or excisional techniques, depending on lesion type, size, and anatomical location. Each specimen is clearly labelled and reported separately to ensure precise interpretation and site correlation.

Why might I need five skin biopsies?

Certain skin conditions require multi-site sampling to establish a diagnosis, assess disease spread, or compare lesion characteristics. Performing five biopsies in one visit reduces delays and avoids repeat procedures.

You may need five skin biopsies if you have:

  • Multiple suspicious or changing skin lesions
  • Lesions with varied colour, texture, or growth pattern
  • Widespread or patchy inflammatory skin disease
  • Several non-healing or recurrent lesions
  • Conditions requiring site mapping or comparison
  • Previous inconclusive biopsy results

Biopsy techniques used

The biopsy method is selected based on clinical need:

Punch biopsy

Removes a small, full-thickness core of skin for detailed analysis.

Shave biopsy

Samples superficial or raised lesions.

Incisional biopsy

Removes part of a larger lesion when full excision is not appropriate.

Excisional biopsy

Removes the entire lesion with margins, often when malignancy is suspected.

Benefits of the 5-specimen skin biopsy service

  1. Five lesions assessed in one visit
Minimises the need for repeat appointments.
  2. Accurate, site-specific diagnosis
    Each specimen analysed independently.
  3. Local anaesthetic only
    Comfortable outpatient procedure.
  4. Efficient for complex presentations
Ideal for multifocal or widespread skin disease.
  5. Supports early cancer detection
Enables timely identification of malignant changes.
  6. Minimal downtime
Most patients resume normal activities quickly.
  7. Clear documentation and reporting
    Each biopsy site clearly identified.
  8. Structured aftercare and follow-up
Results reviewed with clear next steps.

Step-by-step – How the procedure works

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
