Details about STI Blood Screen

What is an STI Blood Screen?

An STI Blood Screen is a serology panel designed to detect serious infections transmitted through blood and sexual contact that may remain silent for long periods.

This screen includes:

• HIV 1 & 2 with p24 Antigen
• Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg)
• Hepatitis C Antibodies (HCV Abs)
• Syphilis Antibodies (IgG/IgM)

By combining antigen and antibody testing, this screen can detect early infection, active infection, and past exposure.

Why do I need an STI Blood Screen?

Many blood-borne STIs do not cause symptoms initially. Early testing protects your health and helps prevent transmission to others.

Reasons for testing include:

• Unprotected sexual contact
• New partner screening
• Multiple partners
• Routine sexual health check
• Needle-stick exposure
• Peace of mind testing

Symptoms that may prompt testing include:

• Rash or swollen glands
• Flu-like illness after exposure
• Fatigue without explanation
• Jaundice or liver-related symptoms

Benefits of the test

1. Detects HIV early (p24 antigen)

2. Screens accurately for syphilis

3. Identifies active Hepatitis B infection

4. Detects Hepatitis C exposure

5. Suitable for routine screening

6. Confidential and discreet

7. Supports early treatment

8. Provides reassurance

Expanded benefit explanation
Early detection of these infections significantly improves treatment outcomes and reduces the risk of transmission.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

It screens for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C using high-accuracy blood assays. It does not test for chlamydia or gonorrhoea, which require urine or swab samples.

No, fasting is not required. You can attend at any time of day.

HIV and syphilis antibodies may take time to appear. We recommend testing from 28 days after exposure, and repeating at 90 days for full reassurance.

Yes. Your information, results, and consultations are entirely confidential. Nothing is shared with your GP unless you request it.

Yes — a phlebotomist can come to your home or hotel to collect the sample discreetly. The test is identical to in-clinic testing.

Very accurate. HIV 4th-generation testing detects both antigen and antibody, reducing the window period and improving early detection. All reactive results undergo confirmatory testing.

Results are usually available within 1–2 business days once the sample reaches the lab.

You can book an optional GP consultation. Our GP will explain your result, arrange further confirmatory testing, and guide you to appropriate NHS or specialist services for treatment.

No — those symptoms are usually caused by chlamydia, gonorrhoea, or mycoplasma, which require urine or swab testing. This panel focuses on blood-borne STIs.

Sexually active individuals are advised to test every 6–12 months, or sooner if they have new partners or unprotected sexual contact.
