A Varicose Vein Scan – One Limb is a duplex Doppler ultrasound focused on the venous system of a single leg. It evaluates blood flow within the superficial and deep veins and checks whether the vein valves are working properly.
The scan identifies venous reflux, vein enlargement, and circulation abnormalities that contribute to varicose veins, leg discomfort, swelling, and skin changes. It is completely non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free.
A one-limb scan is ideal when symptoms or visible varicose veins are limited to one leg, allowing for a targeted and efficient assessment.
A one-limb varicose vein scan is recommended when venous symptoms are localised to a single leg.
You may be referred for this scan if you:
Home-Based Ultrasound Scans (UK-wide)
Important:
All ultrasound scans are provided as home-visit services only. This service is available UK-wide, allowing you to access diagnostic imaging without attending a clinic.
Normal venous function
Blood flows normally toward the heart with no valve leakage.
Typical report:
Superficial venous reflux
Faulty valves cause blood to flow backwards, contributing to varicose veins.
Typical report:
Deep vein involvement
The scan may show abnormalities affecting deep veins, which can influence treatment options.
Typical report:
Results are interpreted alongside symptoms to guide appropriate management.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
