Details about Zika Antibodies IgM and IgG
What is a Zika Antibodies test?
A Zika antibodies test measures IgM and IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Zika virus infection. These antibodies indicate whether the infection is recent or occurred in the past.
Zika is transmitted primarily through mosquito bites in tropical and subtropical regions and can also be transmitted sexually. Many infections cause mild or no symptoms, making blood testing essential after travel exposure.
Why do I need a Zika test?
Zika infection is particularly important to detect for individuals who are pregnant or planning pregnancy due to the risk of fetal complications.
Reasons for testing include:
• Recent travel to Zika-affected regions
• Planning pregnancy after travel
• Partner travelled to Zika region
• Unexplained rash, fever, or joint pain after travel
• Pregnancy screening following travel exposure
Symptoms that may occur include:
• Mild fever
• Rash
• Red eyes
• Joint pain
• Headache
Benefits of the test
1. Identifies recent Zika infection (IgM)
2. Detects past exposure (IgG)
3. Important for pregnancy planning
4. Useful after travel to endemic areas
5. Supports safe conception decisions
6. Detects infection even without symptoms
7. Simple blood test
8. Provides reassurance after travel
Expanded benefit explanation
Because many Zika infections are mild or silent, antibody testing is the most reliable way to determine exposure and reduce pregnancy-related risks.

Follow these guidelines for accurate results
Sample Timing
Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting & Hydration
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Medications & Supplements
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
Hormones & Menstrual Cycle
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
