The Abdomen & Pelvic ultrasound is a combined home imaging examination used to assess major abdominal organs together with relevant pelvic structures.
The abdominal component commonly evaluates the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen and kidneys.
The pelvic component is tailored to individual anatomy and the reason for scanning. It can assess the uterus and ovaries or the prostate and surrounding pelvic structures where appropriate.
Combining both areas can be useful when symptoms cross the boundary between the abdomen and pelvis, such as lower abdominal pain, bloating, pelvic pressure or unexplained structural concerns.
Ultrasound can identify gallstones, cysts, fibroids, some ovarian abnormalities, organ enlargement, abdominal or pelvic fluid and selected masses.
It uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation.
However, ultrasound does not provide a complete assessment of the gastrointestinal tract and cannot exclude every abdominal or pelvic condition.
CT, MRI, endoscopy or specialist pelvic imaging may be required when symptoms persist or a finding needs more detailed characterisation.
