A Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the thyroid gland and surrounding neck structures. It does not use radiation and is considered extremely safe.
The scan evaluates the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, neck soft tissues and lymph nodes. It allows clinicians to assess gland size, structure, nodules, cysts and blood flow patterns with high precision.
This scan is commonly used as a first-line investigation for thyroid nodules, neck lumps and abnormal thyroid blood test results.
A Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound Scan is recommended when there are symptoms, physical findings or blood test abnormalities suggesting a thyroid or neck-related condition. It helps determine the cause and significance of thyroid or neck changes.
You may need a Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound Scan if you have:
Early assessment supports accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
Clinic-Based Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
Thyroid & neck ultrasound scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available. Services are available across the UK.
Results are interpreted based on gland size, structure, nodules and blood flow, rather than numerical values.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
