The Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound Scan is a focused examination of the thyroid gland and selected surrounding structures within the neck.
The thyroid is located at the front of the neck and produces hormones involved in metabolism, temperature regulation and many other physiological processes.
Ultrasound provides detailed structural images of the gland without using ionising radiation.
It can identify thyroid enlargement, nodules, cysts, asymmetry and diffuse changes in thyroid texture.
The wider neck component can assess selected lymph nodes and superficial structures where clinically relevant.
This is different from a thyroid blood test.
Ultrasound assesses anatomy and structure, whereas TSH, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies provide information about hormone function and autoimmune thyroid disease.
Many thyroid nodules are benign.
Where a nodule has suspicious ultrasound features, additional specialist assessment or fine-needle aspiration may be recommended.
