Details about Abdominal Region MRI

What is an Abdominal Region MRI?

An Abdominal MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the organs and soft tissues within the abdomen. Unlike CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation, making it a safer option for repeated or detailed abdominal imaging.

This scan allows clinicians to assess organs such as the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, bowel and surrounding blood vessels. It provides excellent soft tissue contrast, enabling detection of abnormalities that may not be visible on ultrasound or CT.

An Abdominal MRI is commonly used to investigate unexplained abdominal pain, abnormal blood test results, suspected masses, inflammation or to monitor known abdominal conditions.

Why do I need an Abdominal MRI Scan?

An Abdominal MRI scan is recommended when symptoms, clinical findings or previous tests suggest a possible issue affecting the abdominal organs. It helps identify the cause, extent and nature of abnormalities with high diagnostic accuracy.

You may need an Abdominal MRI scan if you experience:

  • Persistent or unexplained abdominal pain
  • Abnormal liver or kidney blood test results
  • Suspected liver, pancreatic or kidney disease
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Abdominal swelling or masses
  • Digestive symptoms not explained by other tests
  • Monitoring of known abdominal conditions
  • Further investigation after ultrasound or CT findings
  • Pre-treatment or follow-up imaging

Early and accurate imaging supports timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment and avoids unnecessary invasive procedures.

Benefits of an Abdominal MRI Scan

·       Highly detailed soft tissue imaging
Excellent visualisation of abdominal organs and structures.

·       No radiation exposure
Safer than CT scans, especially for repeat imaging.

·       Accurate organ assessment
Ideal for liver, pancreas, kidneys and biliary system evaluation.

·       Early detection of abnormalities
Identifies inflammation, lesions, cysts and masses early.

·       Clarifies unclear findings
Often used when ultrasound or CT results are inconclusive.

·       Supports treatment planning
Essential for medical, surgical or specialist decision-making.

·       Monitors disease progression
Useful for chronic or previously diagnosed conditions.

·       Provides reassurance and clarity
Clear answers for unexplained or ongoing symptoms.

Step-by-Step – How We Offer Abdominal MRI Scans

Clinic-Based Abdominal MRI Scan (UK-wide)

  • Choose your nearest UK imaging clinic
  • Attend your scheduled appointment
  • The scan usually takes 30–60 minutes
  • Images are reviewed by a specialist radiologist
  • You receive a detailed written diagnostic report

Important:
Abdominal MRI scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available due to the specialised MRI equipment required. Services are available across the UK.

Your Abdominal MRI Results Explained

Abdominal MRI results are interpreted based on structural and tissue findings, not numerical values.

Normal Results

What this means:

  • Normal size and structure of abdominal organs
  • No masses, inflammation or abnormal signal changes

What it suggests:
Symptoms may be functional, dietary or unrelated to structural disease.

Mild to Moderate Abnormal Findings

What this may show:

  • Fatty liver changes
  • Benign cysts or lesions
  • Mild inflammation
  • Minor organ enlargement

What it suggests:
Often managed with lifestyle changes, monitoring or medical treatment.

Significant or Severe Abnormal Findings

What this may show:

  • Tumours or suspicious masses
  • Significant inflammation or fibrosis
  • Advanced organ disease
  • Vascular or biliary abnormalities

What it suggests:
May require urgent specialist referral, further tests or treatment planning.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. An Abdominal MRI scan is painless and non-invasive. You will lie still while images are taken.

Most scans take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on whether contrast is required and how many areas are examined.

In most cases, no referral is required. A short clinical screening is carried out beforehand.

Yes. MRI does not use ionising radiation and is considered very safe when standard safety guidelines are followed.

It depends on the implant. Many modern implants are MRI-safe, but pacemakers or certain metal devices require additional checks.

Sometimes. Contrast is used when needed to better assess organs, blood vessels or suspected abnormalities.

Results are usually available within a few working days, depending on reporting requirements.

You may be asked to fast for a few hours before the scan. Instructions will be provided in advance.

If you are claustrophobic, inform the clinic beforehand. Support options are available and most patients tolerate the scan well.

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal items such as jewellery, belts or watches.
