Details about Brain MRI

What is a Brain MRI?

A Brain MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a diagnostic scan that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the brain, brainstem, cerebellum and surrounding tissues.

MRI provides superior soft-tissue detail compared to other imaging methods and does not use ionising radiation. It allows assessment of brain structure, blood vessels, nerves and surrounding tissues, helping detect a wide range of neurological conditions.

Brain MRI is commonly used for diagnosis, monitoring, and preventive neurological assessment.

When a Brain MRI is recommended

A Brain MRI may be recommended when symptoms or findings suggest a neurological or brain-related condition.

You may be advised to have a Brain MRI if you:

  • Experience persistent or severe headaches
  • Have dizziness, fainting or balance problems
  • Experience seizures or blackouts
  • Have unexplained vision or speech changes
  • Have weakness, numbness or tingling
  • Have memory problems or cognitive changes
  • Have abnormal neurological examination findings
  • Require follow-up of known brain conditions

What a Brain MRI assesses

The scan may assess:

  • Brain structure and anatomy
  • White and grey matter
  • Brainstem and cerebellum
  • Signs of stroke or reduced blood flow
  • Tumours, cysts or masses
  • Inflammation or infection
  • Multiple sclerosis-related changes
  • Blood vessel abnormalities

Contrast may be used in certain cases to enhance diagnostic accuracy.

Benefits of a Brain MRI

  • Highly detailed brain imaging
    Superior soft-tissue resolution.
  • No radiation exposure
    Safe imaging method.
  • Early detection of neurological conditions
Identifies abnormalities at an early stage.
  • Supports accurate diagnosis
    Guides further investigations and treatment.
  • Non-invasive and painless
No needles unless contrast is required.
  • Safe for repeat imaging
    Suitable for monitoring over time.
  • Assesses multiple brain structures in one scan
    Comprehensive neurological evaluation.
  • Widely used in neurology and neurosurgery
    Standard investigation for brain assessment.

How the Brain MRI is performed

The scan is performed by trained radiology staff using MRI equipment.

  • You will lie on a motorised table
  • The table moves into the MRI scanner
  • You must remain still during imaging
  • Ear protection is provided due to scanner noise

The scan typically takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the protocol. No recovery time is required afterwards.

Understanding your Brain MRI results

Normal findings

Brain structures appear normal with no significant abnormalities.

Typical report:

  • Normal brain MRI

Abnormal findings

Changes such as inflammation, lesions, masses or vascular abnormalities may be identified.

Typical report:

  • Abnormal findings identified – further assessment advised

Incidental findings

Unrelated or benign findings may occasionally be noted.

Typical report:

  • Incidental findings noted

Results are interpreted by a specialist radiologist and reviewed alongside symptoms and clinical history.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
