Details about Full Body MRI

What is a Full Body MRI?

A Full Body MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a comprehensive imaging examination that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the body’s organs, soft tissues, joints and spine.

Unlike CT scans or X-rays, MRI does not use ionising radiation, making it suitable for detailed internal assessment and repeat imaging when clinically appropriate. A full body MRI is designed to identify structural abnormalities, inflammation, tumours, vascular changes, and degenerative conditions across multiple systems.

This scan is often used for preventive health screening, investigation of unexplained symptoms, or monitoring of known medical conditions.

When a Full Body MRI is recommended

A Full Body MRI may be recommended when a broad, whole-body assessment is required.

You may be advised to have this scan if you:

  • Want a comprehensive health evaluation
  • Have unexplained or multi-system symptoms
  • Have a personal or family history of cancer
  • Require detailed soft tissue assessment
  • Have persistent pain without clear diagnosis
  • Are monitoring known medical conditions
  • Want advanced preventive screening
  • Prefer imaging without radiation exposure

What the Full Body MRI assesses

Depending on the protocol, the scan may include assessment of:

  • Brain and spinal cord
  • Neck, chest and abdominal organs
  • Liver, pancreas, kidneys and spleen
  • Pelvic organs
  • Muscles, joints and soft tissues
  • Spine and intervertebral discs
  • Lymph nodes and major soft tissue structures

Benefits of a Full Body MRI

·       Comprehensive whole-body assessment
Multiple organ systems evaluated in one scan.

·       No radiation exposure
Uses magnetic fields, not X-rays.

·       High-resolution soft tissue imaging
Superior detail compared to many other scans.

·       Supports early detection of abnormalities
Identifies issues before symptoms progress.

·       Useful for preventive health screening
Provides broad internal overview.

·       Safe for repeat imaging when appropriate
Suitable for monitoring over time.

·       Non-invasive diagnostic tool
No needles or incisions required.

·       Supports informed clinical decision-making
Guides further investigation or reassurance.

How the Full Body MRI is performed

The scan is performed by trained radiology staff using MRI equipment.

  • You will lie on a motorised table
  • The table moves slowly through the MRI scanner
  • You must remain still during image acquisition
  • Ear protection is provided due to scanner noise

The scan typically takes 45–90 minutes, depending on the protocol used. No recovery time is required afterwards.

Understanding your Full Body MRI results

Normal findings

Organs and tissues appear normal with no significant abnormalities.

Typical report:

  • No significant abnormalities detected

Incidental findings

Minor or unrelated findings may be identified.

Typical report:

  • Incidental findings noted – clinical correlation advised

Abnormal findings

Structural changes, masses, inflammation or other abnormalities may be detected.

Typical report:

  • Abnormal findings identified – further assessment recommended

Results are interpreted by a specialist radiologist and reviewed in clinical context.

How to Prepare for Your Test

Follow these guidelines for accurate results

Sample Timing

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.

If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
