A Musculoskeletal (MSK) MRI scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the body’s musculoskeletal system. This includes joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and surrounding soft tissues. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation.
Musculoskeletal MRI scans can be performed on specific regions such as the shoulder, knee, hip, ankle, wrist, elbow or foot, depending on symptoms. The scan offers exceptional soft tissue contrast, allowing clinicians to detect injuries and conditions that may not be visible on standard imaging.
MSK MRI is widely used in orthopaedics, sports medicine and rehabilitation to diagnose injuries, assess joint degeneration and guide treatment planning.
A Musculoskeletal MRI scan is recommended when pain, swelling, weakness or restricted movement affects joints or muscles and does not improve with rest or initial treatment. It helps identify the exact cause of symptoms, enabling targeted and effective care.
You may need a Musculoskeletal MRI scan if you experience:
Early and accurate diagnosis reduces recovery time and prevents further damage.
Clinic-Based Musculoskeletal MRI Scan (UK-wide)
Important:
Musculoskeletal MRI scans are performed in clinic only. Home visits are not available due to the specialised MRI equipment required. Services are available across the UK.
Musculoskeletal MRI results are interpreted based on structural findings and severity, rather than numerical values.

What it suggests:
Often managed with physiotherapy, activity modification, injections or conservative treatment.
Significant or Severe Abnormal Findings
What this may show:
What it suggests:
May require specialist referral, interventional treatment or surgical assessment.

Where possible, attend your blood test between 7am and 12pm. Please wait until any short-term illness or infection has fully resolved before testing. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.
Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours before your appointment and drink water only. Stay well hydrated, as this helps with sample collection and accuracy.
Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your clinician. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results. If you are unsure about any medication or supplement, please let us know before your appointment.
For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. If relevant, follow any specific guidance provided on your test page.
If you have any questions or special circumstances, our team is happy to advise before your appointment.
